| As I see it…
The signs of spring surround us. I realize that the weather will be fickle between now and when God decides that we’re entitled to some sustained warmth. But in the meantime, consider the following: I saw my first pair of robins last week, preparing a nest under our deck, no less. I saw two bluebirds, not blue jays, bluebirds searching for a new residence. Then yesterday, the first pair of cardinals together. And, as I visually scanned the floor of our woods, a thin layer of green was beginning to form its own blanket of coverage. Buds are forming on bushes; flowering trees have started their annual display of color…even Washington D.C.’s cherry blossoms are in full glory. This is a great time of the year to appreciate all that this season brings with it. Winter’s cold stare and icy grip are fading. Longer daylight hours liven the anticipation of warm summer evenings. Singing birds practice their aviary arpeggios in anticipation of full blown choruses yet to come. The earth and all of its elements demonstrate renewal of color, song and glory. As J. Vernon McGee used to say, “Wouldn’t you hate to be dead on a day like today?” Speaking of which, spring is also in its glory in Israel. My favorite time of the year to visit that ancient land is spring. Winter’s rains have brought wild flowers in the rolling hills of Galilee and Judea into full panorama. Even portions of the desert manage to blossom with hints of green grass and small desert flowers. The bees swarm on the natural beauty and the land of milk and honey comes alive. And even though we may not be sure of the precise date, it’s encouraging to know that the Lord chose the Passover season to demonstrate His power over sin and death. It seems so “natural” that Resurrection Sunday should take place in the spring of the year. So, with tongue in cheek and no disrespect meant to my Savior, I agree with J. Vernon, even Jesus didn’t want to remain dead on a day like this! But you and I both realize that the season of the year had nothing to do with the power of the resurrection. Instead, it was for the glory and power of God and the appeasing and pleasing sacrifice of the Son of God on Calvary that brought Jesus back from the dead. Thus, we not only have hope, we have life…eternal life through the blood of Jesus Christ and the power of the resurrection. Oh death, where is your sting?! Thanks be to God who gives us victory through the Lord Jesus Christ! Pastor Megilligan |
